syncing with Imac - following Dan Stillman indication

I tried to sync several times from the server on iMac with OS X.6.5. First I cleared the local libray and it actually disappeared. Then after a while I get a mesage saying 'local library succesfully restored' and I am back to square1, where I view the library stored in the local iMac and not the one in the server.
What do I do wrong?
