XML tag name mismatch

Hi--I had a student working on one of my documents to convert Endnote citations to Zotero. The student (who works on a PC) sent the new doc back to me (I'm on a mac), and initially when I tried to edit the newly inserted Zotero citations I received the following error message: "Zotero experienced an error updating your document. XML tag name mismatch (expected parent)." Then I restarted and was able to work on the document, but now, going back to the doc a week or so later, no amount of playing around will allow me to sync and update with Zotero. Help! Suggestions? I'm not a programmer, so my toolkit's limited.
  • by "sync and update" you mean the document, right? Not Zotero itself.
    Try these:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting#debugging_broken_documents
also, try switching to a different citation style.
  • Thanks but none of the suggestions in the link are working:
    Track changes are off.
Copying and pasting produces a doc with no detectable Zotero citations.
I can't switch bibliography styles in the doc because clicking on "set doc prefs" just gives me the same error message.
    I deleted the biblio--no change.
No errors are being reported (I do see "[JavaScript Error: "p.onStatusChange is not a function" {file: "chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml" line: 546}]" but new ones don't appear when I try to add citations.
The doc is 60 pages, so I haven't tried isolating 1 citation yet, but I'll work on that. It seems to be all the citations, however.
    Other ideas?
  • Even when I delete every citation in the file, I still get the same error message.

What's weird is that I was able to modify the citations (after a bit of fiddling) when I first received it back from the student.
  • "Copying and pasting produces a doc with no detectable Zotero citations."
insert one citation into that fresh document before you paste.

This really does sound like something royally screwed up that document...
(and yes, the error you see is not Zotero related - the report error function picks up some other things).

If you work with a fresh document everything is fine?
  • update: found the original doc in my email and started from that again--this time the cut/paste technique seems to have worked. Weird. Thanks for your suggestions!
  • If you still have the screwed up file, would you mind sending it (with or without citations) to support@zot..org with a link to this thread? Thanks.
