Can I only store metadata (not PDFs) in Zotero?

Stupid question - can I just store the metadata for my reference library in Zotero, and not all the PDFs?

My EndNote library is 4000+ refs, about 20Mb in size.

My PDF folder is >5Gb.

Ergo, if I can use Zotero for metadata alone, it's free.

If I get charged for all the PDFs that are in my folder, then it's $100 per annum.

I have licences from work for home and the office. I have SyncToy for backup and version control.

The cloud would be lovely, and it would be nice to share stuff online with my labmates, but we are already cutting back our budgets, and more money to replace a system that is working... ain't gonna happen.
data syncing is free for any library size. There is a checkbox to disable file sync in the preferences - I believe it's actually unchecked by default.
  • Excellent. Will have a go at importing my EndNote files.

Thanks for the rapid response, and I hope your namesake's economic policies make a comeback!
  • You may want to look into using WebDAV -- your department may already provide it, and it's free to use with Zotero (your WebDAV host, internal to the department or a private company, might charge for it).
