Character encoding when importing items from web pages?

Do I need to change character encoding for importing items from web pages, when names contain characters beyond ASCII 26? I imported some items with names containing umlaut characters (e.g., o with two dots above), when imported the characters in the name are corrupted. I have not change any character encoding settings in Zotero (assuming they would work for Western European character set). I actually did not find where one change it in the settings.
