Installation - There is no Z

Firefox 3.0.5. Went through install for Zotero 2. There is no Z anywhere. Tools-Options-Manage Add-Ons shows Zotero as enabled .... If I click on any part of that screen, Firefox freezes.

I had this same problem with Zotero 1.x, and gave up on trying to fix it because:

1. The advice I received here was too cryptic to make sense.
2. I had hoped that the days of the hand-crank motor vehicle were behind us.

The upshot of the prior discussion was that Zotero doesn't like my profile. Specifically "OK, well, since the problems you're having are with Firefox, you might consider just moving the entire Firefox data directory, which is the directory containing Profiles and profiles.ini, out of the way. Firefox should create a new data directory and a single new profile, and if it worked you could move your bookmarks and other files back in."

Can you perhaps walk me though the folder structure to find the files in question? And also illuminate on the operational meaning of the phrase "Profiles and profiles.ini". Does this refer to only one file "profiles.ini"? Or does it refer to multiple files?

(grumble) I hate to see software installation processes revert two decades.

No, it wasn't. The upshot was that your Firefox profile was probably corrupt. That's a Firefox problem, as I told you then. And despite your repeated uninformed accusations that this was due to shoddy development work on our end, I still spent a good amount of time trying to help you before you gave up.

Comments like this really aren't helpful, particularly when we've told you repeatedly that this isn't a Zotero problem. This is a Firefox problem. We don't provide support for Firefox problems.

  • Thank you so much.

Cut my profile.ini to another folder, installed zotero, pasted the old profile.ini over the new one. Imported a back up copy of my bookmarks, recovered my passwords from various sources.

I could never have done it without you.
