'See' references in bibliographies

I am looking for a way other than direct edits to include indirect references in a bibliography, e.g.:

IPI report: see Cockayne, Mikulaschek & Perry 2010

Cockayne, J, Mikulaschek, C & Perry, C 2010, The United Nations security council and civil war: first insights from a new dataset, International Peace Institute, New York, viewed 15 September 2010, http://www.ipinst.org/media/pdf/publications/ipi_rpt_unsc_and_civil_war_epub.pdf.

I would like to do this without editing the bibliography directly because I often have late reviewer changes, and edits would disappear when I update the bibliography. Is there some way to do this in Zotero?

Thanks,
Michael
  • there is no regular way to do this, no.
That said, I think the way to go is to include "IPI report" as a separate item both in Zotero and in the bibliography (use "edit bibliography" and add it - this will not prevent future updating etc.)
To get this exactly right, you'll probably have to experiment a little with the fields and the item type - for that purpose the test panel might be helpful:
    chrome://zotero/content/tools/csledit.xul
  • Oh wow, I'd wish I had known about that test panel before. Zotero (and its knowledgeable and helpful user base) doesn't cease to amaze me.

Thanks for that suggestion! I think I can make this work for me.
