formatting font & displaying international characters?

Is there a way, when entering my notes and sources, to access characters other than a standard English alphabet? Something like WordPerfect's "insert character" function? ("Insert symbol" in MSWord.) I have authors and articles from a number of European countries, and I'd like to be able to properly spell their names and titles. I can find no information about setting a font within zotero; does it simply feed off my font for Firefox? I haven't tried html coding these characters, but that seems a bit drastic.
