When I try to import the following article:

http://www.springerlink.com/content/pq7k2q1163583125/

I get an error "Could not save item: An error occurred while saving this item."

Note that the names of the authors are J. Vlček and L. Lukšan.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Go to http://www.springerlink.com/content/pq7k2q1163583125/
2) Click on save as DOI

It complains that it can't find a DOI.

Perhaps the problem is with the colon in the DOI & not the authors?

The author names are not the problem, see, e.g. 10.1023/A:1011942620208

I think it is because CrossRef doesn't know the article titles:

noksagt is correct here -- the data in the CrossRef database is incomplete. You can try reporting this to the journal's publisher-- perhaps they can update the metadata with CrossRef.

This should be an isolated case, and you'll have to enter the data manually for now.

A more detailed error message from Zotero would be certainly be appreciated...

For a number of reasons, Zotero doesn't usually provide great, detailed errors when translators fail. In most cases, though, translators fail for reasons that we can't explain in well-written error messages -- the failures have to be debugged by people who know the innards. In this case, the problem is in the CrossRef database, but the same JavaScript error could have pointed to an error in our parser.
