Proxies : keep proxy URLs up to date somehow?

URLs with resources like Ebsco, Ovid, and Engineering Village often change. Since Zotero, by default, will automatically remember proxied resources, it will save a URL that might change slightly (or drastically) in a few months. I hope that the next version of Zotero builds in some way to keep these URLs up to date.

When proxies are saved together as "Multi-Site" they use %p as a stand-in for the path to the resource that comes after the host name. That's the part that needs to be kept up to date.

For now, I'm just turning off "automatically remember proxied resources" and recommending that library patrons and staff do the same.
  • I don't quite understand - how should Zotero keep these up to date?
If they change on parts of the database vendor (although they really shouldn't - and in many cases don't), there absolutely nothing that Zotero could do - how would it even notice?
And what does that have to do with the automatic proxy service? As you say correctly, that just puts that wherever the wildcard is.
Could you give an example of where this is causing problems?

I've been using the automatic proxy for years and it's one of my favorite parts of Zotero.
  • cross-post from another thread: Yep, this clever feature is smart enough to prompt me to save the url when I navigate to a proxied resource for the first time, but I wish there was something that would help me keep it current, short of deleting or modifying. I resolved an issue with Ebsco's FSSW, Ovid's PsycInfo, and Engineering Village's Inspec by deleting the Multi-Site that was saved in Zotero (I could have edited each one individually if I cared to keep the rest that was saved in there.) I wish I could share that example with you. The only thing I have left is a screenshot from the PsycInfo URL change. I think they recently added the requirement of a page parameter.
  • The "somehow" is the hard part. We could potentially prompt users to delete the old proxy when they navigate to a website through a new one, but there is no way we'll ever be able to determine if a proxy has changed until a user accesses the new address.
