Recommendations for Zotero friendly web based library system.

Hi all,

slightly off topic, but I wanted to seek your advice on finding a (preferably open source) article library system to run as a web service.

I am involved in the sport of Judo and the community of researchers associated with the sport. I am looking to help setup a web service for the community that serves as a replacement for the manually maintained list of peer and non-peer reviewed articles about Judo.

Something that ideally will be compatible with Zotero so that we can minimise refrencing nightmares, especially for students and new researchers. I have actively been encouraging students to use Zotero for a couple of years now. :-)

Something so we can share (and store) article centrally and help promote the research. Something that will allow us to upload a copy of article or abstract (maybe to Amazon S3) and control access potentially. Obviously something that allows us to store and present the metadata in machine and human readible form.

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

Lance

  • If this isn't a terribly large community, what about running the whole thing as a Zotero group, on Zotero.org?
  • Colour me ignorant, but do groups allow file sharing and does it allowed selective sharing?
I like the idea, I think I'll try it.

The only other downside I guess is the group ( www.judoresearch.org ) would probably be happier with something hosted and brandable.

    Thanks for the input.

  • Groups can have files shared to their members. They do not support very complicated permissions, but see if you can make it work.

It can't be branded per se unless you try to run your own Zotero server, but that's a complicated process that I believe no one has actually done on a significant scale. You might be able to approach branding by using the API and RSS feeds to expose group library content on your own site.
  • are you looking for something like this?
    http://vufind.org/
    they label themselves Zotero compatible
  • I help maintain refbase, which is Zotero-compatible through UnAPI+MODS XML. Rich citation information (including attachments and abstracts) are available to Zotero. PDFs can be defined as publicly-viewable or viewable only to those logged in on a per-item basis. The data is also available to non-Zotero clients through numerous standard export formats.

The comparison of reference management software on Wikipedia lists other apps that can support Zotero (look especially for products claiming UnAPI and/or COinS support).

You can also find zotero-specific instructions for various webapps at:

  • Many thanks,
I'm following all those great links now.

  • noksagt,
refbase looks really like what I am looking for.
Shall try an installation this week.
    Thanks so much!
