References adding atomatically

I am using Ms Office 2007. When I click on the Insert citation icon the references are also added automatically. Why are the references being added automatically when I only click on the add citation?

    You click insert citation and what exactly happens? What is, for you, the difference between a "citation" and a "reference"?
