Primo Version 3 (Aleph)

Our library recently upgraded from Primo version 2 to Primo version 3 (interfaces based on our Aleph catalog).

Somewhere in the transition we lost the ability to have Zotero function with our catalog. I am having to recommend that patrons use our "classic" catalog.

I can post screen shots if it would help.

Thanks,

  • Thanks for reporting this. I added Tennessee to an existing ticket and upgraded the tickets priority. https://www.zotero.org/trac/ticket/1603

If you know of any other libraries using Primo v 3 please post links here. The more versions of an implementation the better we can test the translator and the more likely the translator will be tackled in short order.
  • I know that Vanderbilt University Library and the The Royal Danish library is using Primo 3:

  • The University of Minnesota moved to Primo 3 this month. You can find our instance here: http://prime2.oit.umn.edu:1701/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?dscnt=1&dstmp=1284131751869&vid=TWINCITIES&fromLogin=true
  • Here is the University of Waterloo's link to Primo 3.

  • We are finding similar problems, after an upgrade to Primo version 3, we have lost the ability to save to Zotero. Here is the University of Oxford's link:

    http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk

Please let me know if you need any further information from our side as we would like a solution for this to be established.

    Thank you very much.

    Best wishes,
    Masud
  • It may also be worth noting for anyone working on this, that Primo V3 also has (for us at least) an articles tab. While my priority would be just to get out main catalog working; depending on the technical challenges, investigating making the articles tab work at the same time might be worthwhile.

    Thanks
  • Interested parties may want to follow the ticket on this: https://www.zotero.org/trac/ticket/1202

There has been some progress, so you may want to try the two test translators attached to that ticket. Your feedback is welcome.
  • Thank you so much for your work on this!

I would be happy to help try the test translators. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to figure out where I would import the javascript file into my Zotero to see how it preformed.

I know there has to be a help file for doing that somewhere but I cannot for the life of me find it.

    Guidance would be appreciated
  • You'll need to download https://www.zotero.org/trac/raw-attachment/ticket/1202/Primo.2.js and save it as "Primo.js". Then copy it to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory. It should start working-- but there may be some data quality issues because of institution-specific setups.

If you run into a catalog that doesn't work at all or that has major issues with the translator, please let me know. For that matter, post if everything works well also. It would be nice to put something out there.
  • Thanks for looking at this. I tried it out both here (at UT) as well as at a couple of the other Universities listed on the ticket. Unfortunately I was unable to get Zotero to respond in any of the catalogs. Although I can of course always get it to send me to Amazon/Worldcat where I can usually pull in the data.
  • Ok-- the code is getting a little stale. I'll take a look and see what's gone wrong with it.

This may be slightly off topic - but I note in the ticket that "Primo does not have appear to have anything for articles".

The articles tab has a "send to" button that will connect to (amoung other things refworks, endnote, e-mail, connotea).

If I wanted to give Primo feedback, would pushing for a generic RIS export option be the best way to go?

Would Zotero be able to connect to that - or would there be some other underlying system that would be easier for it to work with?
  • I'm not sure what that comment is referring to. Can you provide a URL for an article in Primo that I can use for testing?

There seems to be a generic RIS option in all Primo installations, and I looked into connecting to it. Since it's the same thing as Endnote (and probably Refworks) uses, keeping the RIS clean ought to be a priority for the Primo developers. But I ran into serious issues with some catalogs-- I'll try again, I suppose.
  • If you go here: http://portico.lib.utk.edu/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?mode=Advanced&vid=UTK&tab=remote_tab

You can see the "articles" search. As a non-ut user your best bet is to chance the "search scope" to "health". That way it will function for anyone (all you will get is results from pubmed).

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help
  • The data that Primo produces for articles doesn't look so hot; see this example of RIS for one such article. I suppose that's something, but it's pretty bad.

The comment about articles seems to be about the fact that Primo doesn't provide its proprietary PNX representation for articles, only (bad) RIS.
  • Emory University just upgraded our Primo as well and the translator we were using is no longer working. I tried the primo2.js file mentioned above but had no luck with it. Here is our primo catalog:
    http://discovere.emory.edu/
  • This is one of the library catalogs that I need to sit down and work on, but I've been putting it off for some time. I'll try to set aside a day for long-delayed translator fixes at some point in the coming weeks, since a few have caught up with me in the past 8 months or so.

Apologies for the continued breakage in the meantime.
  • I do not know what happened, but I was ecstatic to notice today that Zotero was working in our Primo 3 installation.
  • Yes, this was fixed in late March (https://www.zotero.org/trac/changeset/8763), thanks to the efforts of Etienne Cavalié. The fix was included in the latest versions of Zotero.
  • Thanks so much for working on this! It makes my life so much easier and makes Zotero user friendly for everyone in our library.
  • Now that the main problem is solved, I will mention this:

Now that the folder appears in Primo, it also appears in the Primo article search, but since article search does not actually work with Primo article searching this brings up a translator error message that can be confusing to newer users.

See: http://portico.lib.utk.edu/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?mode=Advanced&vid=UTK&tab=remote_tab and do a search in health sciences or vet med to get results with PubMed (which should be accessible to everyone).

I do not know if it is possible to tell Zotero the difference between article and catalog searches (and thus not make the folder appear and avoiding the confusion).

I would also be happy to contact Primo to give them feedback on anything they could do to make the data in the article search readable by Zotero so it could work (even better, if possible).
  • Similar to pfernandutk's report, I am having trouble getting Primo article results into Zotero.

I do not see a translator error message. When I click on the little folder it seems to add the citation. But when I view the citation in Zotero, it is blank.

I strongly suspect the error is caused by the fact that Primo is not exposing PNX records for articles. The translator is based on PNX records.

Could developers comment on whether there is another way to do a translation on the article records in Primo? I too would be happy to share any feedback with ExLibris.
  • to facilitate this, could you post a URL to an article in a primo catalog?

Let me know if you want a different URL
  • To pick up on this thread again, now that our library has changed over to Primo 3, we have similar issues with the zotero translator-- the icons show up in the "ARTICLES" tab, but do not work there.

Another problem we are having is that in the Catalog tab, which DOES work with zotero, it's truncating the call number. Can that be fixed?

    Thanks.
  • AFAIK, publishers do not allow ExLibris to publish XML articles metadata stored in the Primo Central Index.

We have another issue here: it seems that the translator is perfectly working when the title of the brief record is an HTML link (a href=).
Unfortunately, the link only appear for e-resources on our site.

Is there any chance for the translator to be adapted for both type of sites (link / no link on title)?
  • please always provide examples for problems you encounter - there are dozens, likely hundreds of Primo installations out there and it saves us a lot of time if you just tell us how to get to the point where you're experiencing a problem.
  • The first issue is a general one: there is currently no way to access to the PNX record for articles provided by Primo Central Index. Primo translator must find another way to extract articles metadata.

The second one is related to all Primo sites that are not providing a link on the title in the brief list. I cannot provide any URL yet since our site is in the final implementation stage, but you can check many Primo installation, for instance Paris Dauphine University:

    http://primo.bu.dauphine.fr:1701/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?vid=DAU

Switch to the English language, then, search for "marketing".
Zotero translator is not working since there are no links on the title in brief list.

If you try the same search at Nice University, you'll notice Zotero is capable to extract the records because of the link on the title:

    http://catalogue.unice.fr/
  • The Swiss Library Catalog Nebis has the same problem like the first comment by pfernandutk (Aug 26th 2010) with Primo 3.

    The URL is http://recherche.nebis.ch/

    Thank you for solving this.
  • thanks - we (in this case I'll probably have to punt to ajlyon) will try, but it's tricky with Primo given the absence of links.
