What I do that achieves similar outcomes is to create dedicated collections for particular manuscripts or projects I'm working on. That allows me at least to filter out a lot of stuff, without having to add a more complicated UI.
BTW, this reminds me: there's an old emacs mode called "Remembrance Agent." It would filter out information based on the content of the buffer. Would be nice to see something like this implemented in a reference management system at some point.
