Style Request: Political Studies?

Hi,

I would appreciate if a citation style for Political Studies could be added. They are based on a Harvard author/date system, but the bibliography is quite different from the available Harvard style in Zotero.
Here is their style guide:

Thanks a bunch!

Let me know if more information is needed! Thanks a bunch for your efforts.
  • that all seems straightforward, should be able to get to it soon, but:
    PS
    (Howarth and Stavrakakis, 2000)
    (Howarth & Stavrakakis, 2000, pp. 20-21)

seriously? It changes to an ampersand when page numbers are given? That's gotta be a mistake, no? Anyway it isn't/wouldn't be possible in Zotero.
  • Yes, that was a mistake. I corrected it.
  • The italics are not displayed here. I have the comparison it in a word file though. I can send it or attach it somewhere if necessary.
  • not quite done, but why don't you take this for a test ride:
    Go here
    http://gist.github.com/514981
download by right-clicking on "Raw" on the top right and save as...
    political-studies.csl
install by dragging the file political-studies.csl to any open FF windows.
Let me know how it goes
  • Thanks for the promt action.

FF means firefox? If I drag it into firefox I get this message: "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below."
    ???
  • ignore that message - do you also get prompted to install the style?
If so, you're fine - you'll find the style in your Zotero.
If not - does the file end with .csl or with .csl.xml?
If the latter you'll have to show Windows file extensions and take out the .xml part - for some reason Windows Vista 7 sometimes add this.
  • uhmm, I neither get prompted to install, nor can I find the style in Zotero. And Windows Vista seems not to have added xml to the file.
    ???
  • edited August 11, 2010
"Windows Vista seems not to have added xml to the file."
    are you sure about that?
Are you seeing file extensions in Vista?
    http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1269/vista_show_unhide_file_extensions/

If this were a .csl file this would either work or you'd get a more meaningful error message.
  • edited August 12, 2010
I followed these instructions but the file extension is cls. It is also classified as a cls file in 'file type'. I dunno why but I am not prompted to install anything when I draw the file into firefox. All I see the above error message and the program code appearing in the window.
  • Is the file extension ".cls" or ".csl"? It should be the latter.
  • edited August 12, 2010
Thanks. It was .cls - over read the difference. I manually changed it into csl. Now I am prompted to install. Will report how it went later.
  • huh - don't know why that happened - I put it up on github as .csl so that's what it should have downloaded...
  • Just downloaded the file again and it had the csl ending. My apologies if I somehow - no idea how - unintentionally changed the extension.
Anyway, the citation style runs smoothly and so far it looks good. I am pretty tired now though and better take another look at it tomo.
  • A few details I found while testing:

    Journal articles ...

need a space in between the volume and issue.
Also, it seems they want the first numeral in page numbers shortened such as in pp. 178-98.

    Paper presented

They want the sentence "Paper presented at." I would leave out "the" from the Zotero style. Many conference names already include "the" and for many other titles a preceding "the" inappropriate. They also want the day and month after the location. I don't know if this could be implemented in Zotero.

    Web page

What I get now is this:
Transparency International. (2002). 'Corruption Perceptions Index 2002'. Retrieved August 13, 2010, from http://www.transparency.org/policy_research/surveys_indices/cpi/2002

and what they want is this:
Transparency International (2002) Corruption Perceptions Index 2002 [online]. Transparency International. Available from: http://www.transparency.org/policy_research/surveys_indices/cpi/2002 [Accessed 13 August 2010].

    PhD Thesis:

    What they want is this:
Lavelle, A. (2003) 'The Wilderness Years: Federal Labor in Opposition'. Unpublished PhD thesis, Department of Politics and Public Policy, Griffith University, November.

I get something very different now.

    Newspapers:

seems to be not formatted so far. They want it in this way:

Klein, J. (2002) 'How the Solidarity Dream Turned Sour', Guardian, 12 June, G2, p. 7.

For italics and further details compare: http://www.politicalstudies.org/styleguide.asp

    Thanks for your efforts!
  • Would really appreciate if somebody could do these alterations. I need to submit my paper soon and it would be great if I could use the style by then.

    Cheers!
  • submission approaching ...
  • I don't have time ATM to fix all these problems, but I did fix the first one.

    http://gist.github.com/561755
  • Thanks a bunch.
  • On newspapers, I don't see how it's possible (looking at the style) that it's "not formatted." indeed, that's not what I'm seeing. Example:

Brown, E. and Hohmann, J. (2009, September 12). 'Anti-Government Demonstration Draws Tens of Thousands to D.C.', The Washington Post. Retrieved from http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/12/AR2009091200971.html

On theses, what do you get now that's "very different"?
  • I meant that newspapers seem not to have been formatted according to the PS style guide.

The current format is this (the 'section' field does not appear):
Klein, J. (2002, June 12). 'How the Solidarity Dream Turned Sour', Guardian, 7.

    and the style guide format:

Klein, J. (2002) 'How the Solidarity Dream Turned Sour', Guardian, 12 June, G2, p. 7.

The current format produces this for a thesis citation (I put 'Department' in the 'place' field and 'unpublished PhD thesis' in the 'type' field):

Lavelle, A. (2003, November). The Wilderness Years: Federal Labor in Opposition (Unpublished PhD thesis). Griffith University, Department of Politics and Public Policy.

The style guide wants it in this way:

Lavelle, A. (2003) 'The Wilderness Years: Federal Labor in Opposition'. Unpublished PhD thesis, Department of Politics and Public Policy, Griffith University, November.

Hope that clarifies the issue. Cheers.
  • OK, that clarifies. Will see what I can do.

Note: you don't want to be doing weird, non-standard, things like putting the department name in the "place" field. I'm not going to code the style like that. Couldn't you just add "Department of Politics and Public Policy, Griffith University" to the "university" field until Zotero implements a better solution?
  • edited September 4, 2010
OK, I made a couple of changes that should address the newspaper issue. Am not sure, though, about where the section info and such would go if this was an online item.
  • Great! Where can I find the style? Here?

    yes.
sorry I've been out of the loop on this
As you probably know APSA was this weekend and I was busy first preparing and then attending. If there's more stuff you need I hope to get to some style coding next weekend.
  • Great. I am testing it.

Yes, I know about APSA. Since you are an archeologist, I wonder what you did there actually? ;)

This is off-topic: I checked your profile. Since I am also into China studies, I find your record very impressive. I particularly envy your language skills. I am really puzzled how you get all this done and be all over the place on the Zotero forum at the same time.
  • For all items they want page numbers shortened such as in pp. 178-98.

The "." following the year need to be removed.

    Book chapters:

    Journal Articles:

    The page numbers appear twice.

  • It seems to me this style is almost done. So, if somebody has a chance, making these adjustments could actually get it completed. How about that?
