Firefox hangs when I transfer PDF files to my library

I just recently started using Zotero more extensively and so have been copying my PDFs to the library en masse and doing a retrieve Metadata en masse as well. This freezes my Firefox and I have to quit. When I open, all the data is there anyway. So I guess that sort of works but on the other hand, its a bit annoying that it has to work this way.

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.
  • importing large amounts of pdfs at once just takes a long time - Zotero indexes them all at once. My guess would be that it's not actually frozen, but that you're not quite patient enough ;-).
  • I'm pretty sure its frozen - it blanks out, for one, but I think you're also right that I might not be just patient enough so thanks. =)

In any case, would you know if there is a storage limitation for Zotero? I would probably have accumulated hundreds of files with notes by the time I finish this darn dissertation and I don't want to have to discover a problem at that time!
  • hundreds of files are definitely not a problem.
Zotero slows down with very large databases - we're talking >5000 entries, most with attachments. If you get that problem you can still speed things up by indexing less of each attached file (you can set that in the preferences).
Zotero also won't sync very large databases correctly (where that starts seems to vary, but no one with less than 4000 entries has ever reported that particular problem and many people sync successfully with more than 5000.).

There is, of course, a storage limitation at 100MB for free storage if you sync your files (note that syncing items and syncing files are different, the former is always free), but that can be extended to whatever you need by paying or by using your own WebDav server or service.
