Does the new Safari Connector in Zotero 10 resolve issues with multiple macOS user accounts?

Hi Zotero team,

I have previously experienced an issue with the Zotero Connector for Safari when using multiple macOS user accounts on the same Mac.

I regularly work with two separate macOS user accounts, each with its own Zotero profile and library. With the previous Safari Connector, when Zotero was running in one account (B), the Connector in the other account (A) would sometimes connect to the Zotero instance in account B instead of the one in account A. As a result, it displayed the libraries from account B when saving references.

We previously tried several approaches to resolve this, including reinstalling the Connector and resetting settings, but without success.

My current workaround is to have the Safari Connector installed and enabled only in account A. This avoids the conflict in my current setup, but means I cannot use the Connector in account B.

I understand that this is a known issue related to how the Connector communicates with running Zotero instances, and that using different communication ports has been suggested as a workaround:

I have not yet tested whether this issue persists with the new Safari Connector in Zotero 10. Before doing so, I wanted to ask:

Does the new Connector architecture address this issue, allowing it to reliably connect to the Zotero instance belonging to the current macOS user account?

If not, is configuring separate communication ports still the recommended workaround, and does the new Safari Connector support this configuration?

Are there any plans to provide automatic isolation between macOS user accounts?

From my perspective as a user, ideally, the Safari Connector should always communicate with the Zotero instance belonging to the same macOS user account, regardless of whether Zotero is running in another account.

Thanks for your work on the new Connector and for any guidance!

There's no difference — the new Zotero Connector for Safari is now more like the other browser extensions, not less — and it's not a "workaround". The Zotero Connector communicates via a local HTTP port, so if you have multiple user accounts, you need to configure the desktop app and the connector in each user account to use the same port. That's why the settings exist.
  • Thanks a lot for your clarification! I've now configured different ports for the two macOS user accounts following the official instruction for such cases, and this seems to have resolved the issue.

The solution was simpler than expected. I had been looking for the problem in Zotero's online synchronization rather than the local connection.

That said, it would be helpful if the Zotero Connector could automatically handle this when used across different macOS user accounts, without requiring manual configuration.

Glad it's finally working. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
