I wonder if you are able to help me. I'm not able to get Zotero to reference correctly for me. Could you please let me know what settings it should be on?

I sent this to my tutor:

As practice, I've been saving the sources we've had a look at as part of this module. Could you please check if there are any glaring issues with what Zotero has produced?

She replied with this:

Zotero is great! However, it's a good idea to double check the output. This website is really helpful as a handy guide to make sure the output aligns: https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide/citation-guide-1.html

With the examples you've sent, citations like this aren't quite the correct format: ‘Geographical Journal - 2004 - MACKINDER - The Geographical Pivot of History 1904.Pdf: LC The Making of the Contemporary World: 1800 to the Present (17304)’. Accessed 12 October 2026. https://canvas.bham.ac.uk/courses/88888/files/21897375?wrap=1.

- you should be citing the document rather than the file, so no links to canvas, no mention of the module name, etc.! The correct bibliographic citation is actually on the Canvas page here:

Halford Mackinder, 'The Geographical Pivot of History' The Geographical Journal, 23 (1904), 4: 298-321.

So I would cross reference with the citation guide linked above to ensure your Zotero citations are correct.
  • It's what the tutor says -- you just don't have the correct metadata for that item in Zotero, so it gets you the wrong citations. You'll have to either manually edit the metadata (that's probably the case for Mackinder) or find a better place to import from (e.g., if you import the first reference from JSTOR via the Save to Zotero button on JSTOR, you get the right reference:

Beckert, Sven. “American Danger: United States Empire, Eurafrica, and the Territorialization of Industrial Capitalism, 1870–1950.” The American Historical Review 122, no. 4 (2017): 1137–70.
