Bibliography syncing issue

We seem to be running into a strange issue with the bibliography syncing to the in-text citations. I've updated to Zotero 10 and am using a Word doc saved in a shared OneDrive. When we changed the document preferences to "AMA Manual of Style 7th Edition" the bibliography seemed to stop updating - if I remove an in-text citation (only citation for that reference in the doc) and then 'refresh', the bibliography doesn't change. The same thing happens for other collaborators on the doc and a librarian at my university replicated the same issue after changing a doc to AMA. I've changed the doc preferences back, closed Word and Zotero completely, restarted the my computer, opened a brand new document, but still the issue persists. The librarian was only able to fix it by having IT delete all the Zotero installation files and reinstall everything which seemed to fix the connection. Has anyone encountered this?

In general, if the bibliography stops updating, you've likely flattened the document — or the bibliography — somehow. Try deleting the bibliography and reinserting it. If it says there are no citations, or if only recently added citations show up, see Existing Citations Not Detected.

If you don't think it's that, and you can reproduce the problem in a new document, provide exact steps to reproduce.
  • We (myself and a colleague) both deleted and reinserted the bibliography many times. It adds new citations as we insert in-text citations and refresh, but doesn't remove them if we delete the in-text citation and refresh. It doesn't say no citations and everything shows up. In a brand new document the same problem still happens.

    Error Report ID: 1838670512
  • Can you provide exact steps to reproduce in a new document?

With Zotero 10.0, in a new document, if I click Add/Edit Citation, select AMA, insert two citations, insert a bibliography, and then delete one citation and click Refresh, the second citation is removed from the bibliography.
  • Thank you!

    - Navigated to Zotero tab in word
    - Document preferences - select 'AMA Manual' citation style & save preferences
    - Add/edit citation to text & add cite
    - Add bibliography
    - Delete in-text citation
    - Click 'refresh' in Zotero word banner section
    - Bibliography doesn't refresh

As far as I know that's how this happened and how the librarian replicated it.

You're deleting the last citation in the document. That doesn't currently delete the bibliography — which it should (or it should add some placeholder), and we have an open ticket for that — but if you just add another citation, the bibliography will update. So this is just a special case that wouldn't occur in normal usage. If you're seeing some other problem, we'd need more steps.
