Upgrade StorageWord crashes when inserting a new citation (insertFieldRaw / RPC failed) – works fine in a new docum
Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me track down a persistent crash. Whenever I try to insert a new citation into my Word document, Word crashes completely.
The key thing is: this document worked perfectly for a long time. I have already inserted a large number of citations into this exact same document without any problems, and it only started crashing recently – in fact it happened from one moment to the next, in the middle of a normal editing session, without me changing anything about the document (I hadn't even closed and reopened it).
Some details that might help:
- Updating existing citations/bibliography works fine – only inserting a new citation crashes.
- In a brand-new empty document, inserting citations works without any problem.
- If I copy the entire content (Ctrl+A / Ctrl+V) into a new blank document and set the document preferences, inserting works there too – so the citation data itself seems fine. The problem appears to be tied to the original document's structure.
- The crash happens regardless of where in the document I try to insert.
The Zotero debug output shows:

and the Windows Event Viewer logs the crash in Word itself: faulting module `wwlib.dll`, exception code `0xc0000005` (access violation).
Setup:
- Zotero 9.0.6 (64-bit)
- Windows 11
- Microsoft Word version 16.0.20228.20110 (Microsoft 365)
- Citation style: a custom CSL ("First Break (Deutsch)")
What I've already tried, without success:
- All the steps from the Zotero word processor troubleshooting page
- Moving the file off OneDrive to a purely local folder (C:\...) and disabling AutoSave
- Office Quick Repair
- Word's "Open and Repair" on the document
None of these resolved the crash on the original document.
I'm happy to share debug output / a debug ID or the Windows crash report if that helps diagnose the issue – just let me know what would be most useful. Since this is my thesis document I'd really like to recover the original file rather than rebuild it if at all possible.
