APA 7th Edition Disambiguation of 3 Authors for In-Text Citations
I am using Zotero for Mac version 9.0.6 and am having issues with automatic in-text citation disambiguation of authors that adheres to APA 7th edition rules. The issue is that I have multiple documents that have the same lead author, three authors in total, published the same year, and in-text citations shortening to (Author Last Name, Author Last name, et al., Year) because APA uses et al. to mean "and others" which indicates that it cannot be used to replace a single author name and the last author's last name must be written out.
Real world example:
van Zomeren, M., Spears, R., & Leach, C. W. (2010). Experimental evidence for a dual pathway model analysis of coping with the climate crisis. Journal of Environmental Psychology, 30(4), 339–346. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jenvp.2010.02.006
van Zomeren, M., Leach, C. W., & Spears, R. (2010). Does group efficacy increase group identification? Resolving their paradoxical relationship. Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 46(6), 1055–1060. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jesp.2010.05.006
According to APA 7th edition, the in-text citation for each of these, when used in the same paper, should appear as:
(van Zomeren, Spears, & Leach, 2010)
(van Zomeren, Leach, & Spears, 2010)
Instead, the automatic output for in-text citations from Zotero when adding a citation is:
(van Zomeren, Spears, et al., 2010)
(van Zomeren, Leach, et al., 2010)
This disambiguates between the sources, yes, but does not adhere to the 3 author rule when using et al. to replace more than one author at the end of the citation.
Suggestions for what to do as a workaround would be most appreciated. It's not a huge deal, but I am writing a thesis and would appreciate to not have to go through the whole paper and manually change each in-text citation if necessary. Thank you in advance for any insight you might have.
