Bibliography in Word doesn't update

Zotero 9.0.6 (64-bit, Windows): How can I force Word to update the Zotero bibliography after metadata changes?

I am trying to update an existing Word document after correcting metadata in Zotero, but the bibliography does not update.

System:

Windows
Zotero 9.0.6 (64-bit)
Microsoft Word (Windows), MS365

A colleague corrected many metadata errors in my Zotero library (titles, authors, journal information, DOI information, etc.). I need these corrections to propagate to an existing Word document containing Zotero citations and a Zotero-generated bibliography.

However:

Zotero → Refresh does nothing.
Zotero → Document Preferences → OK: does not update the bibliography.
Right-clicking in Word → Update Field does nothing.

The document still appears to be connected to Zotero:

Zotero → Add/Edit Citation recognizes the existing citations.
Alt+F9 shows that the citations are still Zotero fields.
As a test, I changed a cited Zotero record (e.g., added “TEST123” to the Title field), returned to Word, clicked Refresh, and the bibliography still did not change.

How can I force Zotero/Word to rebuild the bibliography from the current Zotero records?

Is there a way to trigger a complete regeneration of the bibliography without manually replacing all citations?

Removing the bibliography and generating a new one also didn't work. It generates the old bibliography again.

Again, when manually editing a reference, it's there immediately, suggesting the link is still there.

Thank you.
  • I'd guess that you inserted citations from your personal library and your colleague corrected the errors in a group library. If so, those would be separate, unrelated items.

You can use Show in Library from the item-details popup in the citation dialog to see the actual item the citation is linked to.
