Word shows "Convert File" dialog when inserting a citation, then Zotero fails to update the document
Hello,
I am experiencing a persistent problem with the Zotero Word plugin that started recently. I have already gone through the troubleshooting guide, but unfortunately the issue persists.
Environment
Operating System: Windows 11
Microsoft Word: Word 2019 MSO (64-bit), Version 16.0.10417.20153
Zotero: 7.0.15 (64-bit)
Debug ID: D1161782221
Description of the problem
The Zotero plugin is loaded correctly in Word, and communication between Word and Zotero appears to work:
The Zotero ribbon is present.
Document Preferences opens normally and I can change citation styles (APA, Nature, etc.).
Clicking Add/Edit Citation opens the Quick Format citation bar.
I can search my library and select a reference without any problem.
However, immediately after selecting the reference and confirming the citation:
Word displays a "Convert File" dialog ("Convertir archivo" in Spanish), asking me to choose a file conversion format (Plain Text, Encoded Text, RTF, HTML, etc.).
If I cancel or accept the dialog, Zotero then displays:
"Zotero experienced an error updating your document."
In some cases, a citation such as [1–3] appears in the document, but Zotero still reports the update error.
If I try to edit that citation again, Zotero recognizes it as an existing Zotero citation and warns that it has been modified, suggesting that the citation itself was created but the document update failed.
The problem occurs even in a completely new blank document.
Things I have already tried
Reinstalled the Microsoft Word plugin from Zotero Preferences.
Restarted both Zotero and Word.
Tested with a brand-new blank document.
Started Zotero in Troubleshooting Mode.
Disabled the "Confirm file format conversion on open" option in Word.
Confirmed that Document Preferences works correctly.
Confirmed that Quick Format works until the moment the citation is inserted.
The problem is independent of the citation style selected.
Word successfully detects the Zotero plugin (Zotero.dotm is loaded).
Additionally, the Zotero Error Console repeatedly reports errors such as:
No se puede eliminar el intervalo.
[setTextY::zotero\word-for-windows-integration\build\zoterowordintegration\field.cpp]
which translates to:
"Cannot delete the range."
Additional observation
The issue seems to occur after Zotero has generated the citation, specifically while updating the Word document. Since the Quick Format dialog works correctly and the citation is sometimes partially inserted, it seems that communication between Word and Zotero is functioning, but the update process fails.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you need any additional logs or tests.
Thank you very much.
