Footnotes get instead of " or sometimes around names that should be italicized.

I have started getting an <i> instead of the " or sometimes I get them around words that should be italicized. This just started happening after I merged several files into a large document. But now, even when I split the document, I get this same thing. Sometimes, I can copy and paste into a new document and it will not give me the <i> at first, but then as I work, I get the <i>. Is there a setting or something that I need to do?
