Zotero Plug in Word Problem with bibliography

I work on the document, everything looks fine. I save on cloud and close Word. Later I reopen the same document. As soon as I insert one new citation anywhere in the document, Zotero seems to rebuild the entire bibliography and renumbers all citations from 1 again. My previous bibliography block at the end is effectively replaced, and the new bibliography starts again at 1, as if this were a fresh document. Most of the time I don't even have to close word... the bibliography almost always starts new and then I have 2 or 3 bibliography lists. Sometimes some citations get lost.
  • Thank you! But I‘ve already read this one before and none of it apply to me… That’s why I am asking

It means something about how you're saving the file is flattening the document. This would never happen if you just saved a document as a .docx. Zotero creates standard Word fields.
  • I only use Word and everything saves automatically on OneDrive by word.

Something else on your system might be modifying the file, or you might be saving as something other than .docx. I'm afraid you'll need to figure this out on your own. Again, Zotero creates standard Word fields (the same as, say, inserting an auto-updating date field in your document via Word), which obviously would survive a standard .docx save.

(You can test this in a new document saved as a .docx to your desktop.)
  • But it is docx, but the bibliography always gets confused. And I have to screenshot it and unlinik the citations and restart, because otherwise I have 2 bibliographies. It is definitely docx, see the picture.

  • Again, you can test in a new document saved to your desktop. But you're going to have to believe us when we say that a regular .docx save doesn't flatten Word fields and figure out why this is happening for that document.

(And it's not just about the bibliography. It's about all citation fields in the document. That's why it's creating new citations as "1" — because there are no active Zotero citations remaining in the document.)
  • Another question, why does it put the bibliography list in the middle of the document and not in the end?
  • It inserts it wherever your cursor is when you click Add/Edit Bibliography the first time in a document. If you inserted it at the wrong place, you can delete it and reinsert it at the end.
