RIS files Date issues when exporting reference Library from RefWorks to Zotero

edited 4 hours ago
Hi there,

I'm a librarian, and recently I helped a student migrate her reference library from RefWorks to Zotero. After the import, many of the date fields were incorrect (for example, dates appeared as "0000-11").

I've done some testing and found additional examples of the same issue. Here's one example:

From what I can see, the problem seems to be related to how Zotero handles the date fields in RIS files (Y1, PY, and DA). It appears that Zotero is prioritizing the DA field over Y1.

I came across this discussion from a few years ago:

https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/83381/wrong-date-imported-from-ris-file

However, based on the cases I've tested this week, Zotero seems to be using DA instead of Y1.

For example, in one RIS file the DA field contained only "JAN", while the Y1 field contained "2014". Zotero ignored Y1 and imported the date as "0000 JAN", presumably to make sense of the incomplete DA value.

Could this be a recent bug? I don't think I experenced this issue before. The issue only appeared in Zotero, import to Mendelay or EndNote was fine.

Has anyone else experienced similar date-import issues when transferring references from RefWorks to Zotero?

Thanks.
