Word integration broken after Zotero 9.0.5 update – {Citation} inserted instead of citation

Hello,

I am using:

Zotero 9.0.5
Windows 11
Microsoft 365 Version 2605 (Build 20206.20168)

After installing the Zotero update that was recommended because of the June Windows update, I can no longer insert citations into Word.

Symptoms:

Zotero Word Add-in is installed.
Document Preferences opens normally.
I can select a reference in Add/Edit Citation.
After clicking the checkmark, Word inserts {Citation} instead of a citation.
Sometimes a "Convert File" dialog appears.
In a completely new blank document, Add/Edit Bibliography immediately triggers a dialog asking whether a Zotero field should be replaced.
The Zotero progress bar remains visible and the process appears to hang.
The problem also occurs in a completely new blank .docx document.

  • Not sure why you think you have 9.0.5? You're running Zotero 9.0.1.
  • Thank you. You're right. I checked and I am still running Zotero 9.0.1. The updater seemed to run, but apparently the update was not applied successfully. I will try updating again and report back.
  • (If the update doesn't work, you can just download and re-install, which works just like an update and doesn't affect your data)

    You were right — I was still running Zotero 9.0.1. I manually installed the latest version, and the problem is now completely resolved.
