It's now possible to download the official APK of the Zotero Android app from zotero.org:

This allows people using devices without access to the Google Play Store to safely install the app. It's also possible to automatically keep the app updated via a tool such as Obtainium.
Zotero builds that weren't installed from the Play Store will automatically check for updates and show a banner if on an outdated version.
