Aberrant "Author, Author, et al." reference

I've searched around and haven't found another thread with this question.

I'm using Chicago.

I've got one, aberrant multi-author reference showing up as "Author, author, et al." instead of "Author et al." as all the other multi-author references show up.

I've tried deleting the reference and putting it again. Same. I also tried deleting the second author, at which point it just populated with the third (so I put the second back in).

The add/edit popup actually shows it correctly in choosing it. But it doesn't show up correctly in the doc.

I don't see anything in the zotero app entry that would cause it to do this.

Ideas?
  • That's correct Chicago style for references with same first but different second author (CMOS 18, 13.123 if you want to look at the source)
  • Oh, I see. It means there is not just 1 aberrant reference; there are at least two, and they both have the same first author and date so CMoS adds the second author to both (or all) of those references to distinguish them.

    Appreciate it.
