DOI lookup and “Retrieve Metadata for PDF” both failing (no proxy settings visible in Settings)

Hi,

I’m having persistent problems with both DOI lookup and “Retrieve Metadata for PDF” in Zotero, and I’m hoping for some help diagnosing what’s going wrong.

WHAT’S HAPPENING:

When I use the magic‑wand “Add item(s) by identifier” with valid DOIs (for example:
- 10.1016/S0140-6736(15)00238-X, or
- 10.1177/2045125317734977
nothing is imported, and get no apparent response.

When I right‑click on a PDF in my library and choose “Retrieve Metadata for PDF”, it also fails. The window opens and then nothing further happens (see image).

Opening the DOI URLs directly in my browser works fine, so the DOIs themselves are valid and my general internet connection is OK.

WHAT I’VE ALREADY TRIED:

1. Confirmed that I’m using the magic wand in the Zotero desktop app, not the browser extension, and that I’m pasting the bare DOI (no https://doi.org/ prefix).

2. Turned my VPN off and tested again.

3. Added Zotero as an allowed application in my antivirus and firewall (Bitdefender), for both network access and antivirus scanning.

4. Checked Zotero Settings:

- On my system, the path is Edit → Settings → Advanced.

- There is no visible Network or

Proxy panel in Advanced, only:

- Miscellaneous (translators, “Update now”, etc.)
- Language and Region
- Files and Folders
- Database maintenance
- Shortcuts / Feeds / Search
In other words, there is no proxy configuration I can access or change via the UI.

SYSTEM DETAILS:

- OS: [Windows/macOS] [version, if you want to add it]
- Zotero version: 9.0.4 (64-bit)
- Security software: Bitdefender (firewall + antivirus)
- VPN: Bitdefender

I have generated debug output for both a failed DOI lookup and a failed “Retrieve Metadata for PDF” attempt, with Debug ID: D502205462

Could someone please look at this debug log and let me know what is blocking Zotero’s requests?
