Highlight tool

Hello!

Longtime Zotero user here. A quick question for the community.

Is there a way to categorize the highlight tool? For example, if I wanted anything highlighted in yellow to mean "background" and anything highlighted in green to mean "source material". Does Zotero have a feature like this?

Thanks!

What do you mean by "categorize", exactly? What are you trying to accomplish?

You can't assign labels to annotation colors. Some version of that is a common request, but it's not particularly clear how it would work — within a given document, across an entire library, across all libraries, etc.

Note that you can always periodically filter all annotations by color for a given document, select them all, and drag them to a tag in the bottom left. You could then filter annotations across your library by that tag, create a note from those annotations, etc.

It's not currently possible to filter annotations by color from the main library view, though that's planned.
  • The Actions and Tags plugin for Zotero lets you add labels to colours and I find that helpful across all my libraries: https://github.com/windingwind/zotero-actions-tags/discussions/211

  • I use most of these when reviewing prize/grant applications and student work (eg theses, dissertations. Once I have been through the whole thing, highlighting the good stuff, the bad stuff, the formal problems etc., it is then trivially easy to pull it together into a report by filtering for annotation colour/meaning and dragging the examples into a note.
