    You can enter these items as Journal Article and then put this in Extra:
    type: periodical

    That will be picked up and formatted as a full journal issue for styles that have been updated to support this item type

    but this is - when you take into consideration how other tools do it - a really stupid way, sorry. just add an explicit new type for journals/periodica

    That's how things can be done at the moment. No one claims that it is perfect.

    Thanks to @bwiernik for the current workaround for adding periodicals. I'm just checking in to determine if this feature is planned or not? (I might hold off from adding many periodicals for now if it is still planned.)

    Likely yes, but if so, items with type:periodical will be automatically converted.

    That is, add this to Extra to ensure items will be automatically converted if a Periodical type is added:
    type: periodical
