Valid style file

Hi - I followed the instructions here: http://www.zotero.org/support/csl_simple_edits about how to modify a style. I saved it in Text Edit (Mac) as a rtf and then under get info changed the file extension from .rtf to .csl. When I move this across to Firefox it says that it is not a valid style. Trying via Zotero preferences gives me the same failure. I repeated from the beginning again (e.g. modifying a style using chrome://zotero/content/tools/csledit.xul), but experienced the same problems. Probably me just being stupid, but any ideas?
  • for a start, save a .txt and not as .rtf
If that doesn't help, go to http://validator.nu
use "upload file" to select your .csl file
    and put
    http://bitbucket.org/bdarcus/csl-schema/raw/83f9cf9b53bd/csl.rnc
    where it says "Schema".
Check the "Be lax about HTTP content box"
    click validate.
Post here what it says in the Red fields - maybe you can make sense of it yourself.
  • Great, it was the txt vs rtf that was the problem, I was trying to do it from TextEdit as advised in the help file, but you cannot do that from TextEdit as far as I could see....did it in Word and now my file is acceptable!

Now I just need to iron out the little problems in how to edit journal formatting - some are short form and some not....this has taken a lot longer than I thought it would, but THANKS a million for your help!
  • OK - great - this should be fixed in the instructions then. I'll need someone with TextEdit to either confirm that TextEdit doesn't do text or how to get it to save in text so we can add it to the documentation.
  • Format menu -> Make Plain Text.
