In Google Docs - citations are added in the middle of words

I'm using Google Docs - I've added citations to the document without any issues, but now I'm going back through and adding additional citations. When I add a new citation, it adds the citation, but then it adds it multiple times in the following sentences in the middle of words (and it removes some letters) ex: "can with VCFtools46ith individuals from" The 46 should not be there - it should be "tools with". Any ideas why this is happening and how to prevent it moving forward?
