Which PDF metadata does Zotero read to retrieve the citation/bibliographic information from the PDF?

I am currently preparing a document as PDF and I would like to embed the citation/bibliographic metadata into the PDF, so that Zotero (and other citation managers) can automatically extract this information. Please note that the report PDF will *not* have an identifier like DOI, ISBN, etc. Which citation metadata can Zotero retrieve from the PDF?

I see that it is possible to add (at least) following bibliography/citation-relevant metadata into the PDF:
* Dublin Core Properties
* Prism standard
* Crossref crossmark
* niso.org scheme

Which one should I embed into the PDF so that Zotero can retrieve the information?

Best,
Gerald

  • Does anyone have an answer to my questions about PDF metadata that are read by Zotero? I would like to create a PDF containing bibliographic metadata that Zotero understands. The PDF, however, does not have a DOI or ISBN, etc. How can I prepare a PDF in that way that Zotero automatically retrieves the bibliographic information?
    Thanks in advance!

    The Retrieve Metadata feature uses a Zotero web service to find item metadata. The Zotero client sends the first few pages of text from the PDF to the web service, which uses a variety of extraction algorithms and known metadata from Crossref, paired with DOI and ISBN lookups, to build a parent item for the PDF. The Zotero lookup service doesn’t require a Zotero account and doesn’t log any data about the content or results of searches.
  • Thanks poettli, does this mean that the metadata of the PDF are not read by Zotero? What do I need to do for a document that doesn't have a DOI or ISBN, and is not listed in Crossref? Is there any way that Zotero automatically creates a parent item and extracts the bibliographic information?
