Request: Independent Sync Options

It seems like right now one could implement their own independent sync with an instance of Zotero, a reverse proxy, and then installing custom certificates on an android phone, a reverse proxy server somewhere spoofing the cert an faking the domain name on the router ... and then reimplementing the authentication mechanisms? Then the mobile app should in theory be able to sync with a service other than api.zotero.org on the open internet.

Alternatively, it seems like a hostname option could be added to the desktop and mobile applications wherever the username and password exist, with the default api.zotero.org pre-filled. Or make this an advanced option, and then allow that hostname to be overridden?

I like the app, I like the desktop app, I like the extensions ... I like that there is free hosting plus an offer for a turnkey solution for this that supports the project, and I like the bias towards open collaboration... and once all of this going the webdav storage is great ... but is this also a possibility? It seems weird to have an open source project tied to a service and its uptime for operation, and it would be nice to know that my collections can be managed by myself across devices and platforms that I manage. Thank you for your time!
