Citation style not changing despite changing in document preferences

I have a document that was written with Vancouver style citations (generated by Zotero and I have the Zotero program open, etc.). However, I need to change them to AMA style. I clicked document preferences, selected the style I wanted, and checked the box to automatically update citations - absolutely nothing happened. In fact, all it appeared to do was unlink the in-text citations from the references list at the end of the document.

Please help, this is going to be incredibly tedious to redo all of these :(

It didn't unlink them. That just means they were already unlinked by something you (or someone else who worked with the document) did.
