Is there a way to turn off creation of new fields?

I appreciate the new fields, but the autoaddition of them on sync is breaking the ability to sync with my backward compatible (yes, Juris-m) version, and now I (and nobody else using juris-m, I presume) can sync between 2 machines anymore. It would helpful if there were a pref to turn off this option for those who don't want it (yet). I'm looking at a way to convert the bluebooking to a plugin but (like Frank, I guess) life is in the way, as is learning the codebase.
