Stuck in updating DB, Debug ID D65580512

Hey Zotero team, thanks a ton for providing Zotero and constantly improving it.

Alas, the newest version seems to have a problem digesting my really large Database (~350k items, ~37GB zotero.sqlite, 1k+ nested collections). Zotero seems stuck with "upgrading/migrating new fields from Extra field" for ~24h now. UI is responsive, but Item pane only shows "Loading Items". I am not using Syncing.

I am running Zotero 8.0.3 on Windows 11 64bit. Process Explorer shows 3 active processes, one of which with CPU ticks every 3 seconds, an earlier check came up with "DB healthy". However, I experienced some crashes after program startup earlier.

The debug report from just now is uploaded as ID D65580512.

My plan is to split up the giant Database into three smaller ones via Export/Import of collections anyway (I don't mind the work), so that may avoid such situations in the future. But to do that, I need working access to the database, which I am not having now. Only two weeks ago, I was able to work with the big database just fine, i.e. with startup times <30min. So my guess is, the DB Upgrading process is what stands in the way for now.

I would be glad to receive some help or advice on this, thanks a lot in advance.

You're getting an error — it's not actually still running.

Can you provide a Debug ID for Zotero startup through waiting for 10 minutes of so, using the Help → Debug Output Logging → "Restart with Logging Enabled…" option? You can use "View Output" to see if/when output stops and submit it at that point.
  • Thanks for the quick response, and saving me further waiting time.

New report uploaded after ~10mins of "Loading Items" as ID D1299103652

A bit overwhelmed by the report, I looked at a handful before in the past days, but never saw it so bulky lol.
  • Oh, sorry, I forgot to check the "Restart with Logging Enabled…" option first.
Did it now, with Troubleshooting option checked, and still got a voluminous debug output, but a rather different looking one.

Item pane still only shows "Loading Items".

Submitted new report as ID D752148702
  • Just for reference, I already received very pertinent help for a similar problem 9 years ago, which helped me keep my project on track - thanks again for that. It seems I am one of those fringe users who keep pushing Zotero towards its physical limits.
