new user. "set up syncing" not working

New user of Zotero here. (Or trying at least.) I have set up a username and password and downloaded the software. When I go to zotero settings and try to set up syncing for the first time, after I put in the username and password and click the button I just get the endless arrows turning in a circle, and nothing else happens. I first installed zotero 7. Then updated to zotero 8. Same issue with both. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? The computer's internet connectivity is fine. Thanks for your help.
