Feature Request: Expanding Tag Color Limits and Integrating Journal Rank Metadata (SSCI/SCIE, ..etc)
Subject: Expanding Tag Color Limits and Integrating Journal Rank Metadata (SSCI/SCIE, ..etc)
Dear Zotero Development Team,
I am writing to propose two critical enhancements that would significantly empower researchers who manage high-volume, high-quality archives. While Zotero is an exceptional tool, current limitations in visual organization and metadata depth create bottlenecks for professional academic workflows.
1. Expansion of Tag Color Limits and Custom Color Support
Currently, Zotero limits color-coded tags to only nine, tied to numeric shortcuts. From a technical standpoint, this does not seem to be a memory or processing constraint, but rather a UI design choice. However, for researchers who categorize items by multiple criteria—such as journal tiers (SSCI, SCIE, SCOPUS, KCI), research methods, and personal priority—9 colors are insufficient.
- I propose removing the 9-color limit.
- I suggest allowing users to input Hex/RGB color codes for custom tagging.
- Even if shortcuts remain limited to 1-9, let us assign colors to dozens of tags for better visual scanning in the library view.
2. Integration of Journal Rank Metadata (Linked to Journal Authority Control)
Building on my previous proposal for "Journal Authority Control," it is vital for researchers to track the "Rank" of a journal (e.g., SSCI, SCIE, AHCI, SCOPUS). Currently, we must use tags for this, which consumes the limited color slots mentioned above.
- I propose adding a dedicated "Journal Rank" or "Index Status" field within the Journal Authority/Management interface.
- This information should be manageable at the "Journal level" (so it applies to all volumes) but also allow for "Year-specific status" (since a journal's status can change over time).
- In the library view, a visual indicator (like a small icon or colored badge) for these ranks would allow users to prioritize their reading and citations at a glance.
By combining "Journal Lineage Management" with "Expanded Visual Tagging" and "Rank Metadata," Zotero would evolve from a simple reference manager into a comprehensive Academic Intelligence Tool. This would allow us to maintain historical integrity while managing the prestige and quality of our sources with professional precision.
Thank you for your dedication to the research community.
Sincerely,
With deep gratitude.
