When I click "Show File" nothing happens

I've been using Zotero for the last 3 years. I'm currently on the 8.0.3 version (which I don't prefer but I digress). As of today, when I click on "Show File" to pull-up the folder location of the PDF, nothing happens. No error message. Nothing. I've checked my settings and the Data Directory Location is the default C:\Users\MyName\Zotero.

I don't know what to do and considering the fact that I have over 600 files...I'm freaked out a bit.

Please help me troubleshoot!

Can you provide a Debug ID for reproducing this?

Can you open the files normally within Zotero?
  • Hi, yes, it's D1549979078. And yes, I can open PDF file tabs just fine within Zotero.

Can you reproduce this in Troubleshooting Mode (Help → "Restart in Troubleshooting Mode…”)?

    And after restarting your computer?

    Is this an institutional computer?
  • Hi. I'm not sure what to do after Troubleshooting Mode. Can I reproduce it? I mean, I restart in troubleshooting mode, right-click, show file, and nothing happens...so yes?

Also, I restarted my computer and nothing changed. It's my personal laptop.

Are you running any non-standard security software?

Are you using multiple monitors? Have you checked that the window isn't just appearing somewhere you're not looking?

There's no indication of a problem in your debug output — Zotero runs the system command to reveal the folder.

You can try Zotero 7 (just with the ZIP version, in a folder) from the download page and see if that behaves any differently, but there's no particular reason this should have changed in Zotero, and we haven't received any other reports of it.
  • I have the exact same problem with version 8.0.3

    Debug ID: D2107290543

Not an institutional computer, serveral restarts later.
I initially thought this was a problem with the Action & Tags plugin. When tried to "Show File" on a PDF I got a message from the plugin that the automated action had already been performed. When I disabled the plugin nothing happened at all when I tried to "Show File".

@eljobi: You have multiple plugins enabled there. Can you provide a Debug ID for Zotero startup through reproducing this, using the Help → Debug Output Logging → "Restart with Logging Enabled…" option with Troubleshooting Mode enabled?

Beyond that, same questions and suggestions for you.
  • I followed the instructions but Zotero does not restart. Nothing seems to happen and when I try to start Zotero manually, I get the message that an instance of Zotero is already running.

You need to close Zotero completely. Restart your computer if you're having trouble.
  • Some plugins (it was Beaver.ai for me) massively delay proper shutdown of Zotero. I'd honestly just wait for 10mins and that might do it.
  • Help → Debug Output Logging → "Restart with Logging Enabled…" option with Troubleshooting Mode enabled => didn't work; Zotero restarted with Plugins stil enabled

I manually disabled all the plugins and then turned on logging => Debug ID: D1987636011

(A plugin may have been breaking restarting for you. The "Troubleshooting Mode" checkbox certainly should work, and does for me.)

So then same questions and suggestions as above. There's nothing wrong shown in the logs.

  • I just noticed that I have the same problem with the browser (Zen, Waterfox) - nothing happens when I click on "Show in Folder" from the download list. Probably some Windows bug, then.

    Thanks for the help.

    @dstillman

I'm running Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which hasn't changed.

I am using multiple monitors, but I checked, and it's not opening anywhere.

I'll try Zotero 7 again...fingers crossed. Thanks for your help!
  • @distillman When I open the Zotero 7 from the zip folder, it opens my existing Zotero 8. Am I doing something wrong?
  • dstillman Zotero Team
No it doesn't. It just uses the same data directory. You can see the version from the Help menu.
  • You're right, it just looks the same, but it's Zotero 7. And also doesn't open file location. What happens if I uninstall and reinstall? Am I going to mess up my files?
  • dstillman Zotero Team
Don't do that. This isn't a problem in Zotero. Nothing has changed here, and you just confirmed that the problem happens with Z7. Something on your system changed to break this.
  • Got it. I just don't know how else to try and resolve this.
