Annotations in the Items List

...I do not like it, Sam I am.

Is there a way to turn this off? I have A LOT of annotations and they clutter my Items List.

  • Can you say more about how exactly you're finding that they clutter your items list?

To be clear, you won't see them unless you expand attachments or perform a search that matches them. If you only want to search for parent items, you can use "Title, Creator, Year" mode. You can also use the other modes and then click an item and press "-" on the keyboard to collapse all items.

We'll be adding an option to hide non-matching (gray) context rows when performing searches, since we know that that works less well in libraries with large numbers of annotations.
  • Thanks for your reply! Here is a view of my items list since v8...only 2 items visible.

I've been looking for an 'expand/collapse attachments' view, but seem to be missing it, and manually collapsing items doesn't persist between sessions.
  • Ok, I'm catching up. The expanded view is only in a filtered view. Is there a toggle for turning that option off?

That's a search in either All Fields & Tags or Everything mode, and the problem is just the gray context rows. Zotero has always worked like this, but it's more of a problem for annotations because there can be so many. So an option to hide non-matching context rows during searches will address this.

For now, I explain your current options above.
  • An alternative might be an "Include Annotations" checkbox in the quick-search menu. Do you want to see annotations that match your search (and only annotations that match your search) or just not match annotations at all? Might that vary depending on the search?
  • Ok, it all makes sense now. I genuinely appreciate your work and patience with smart*** comments like mine!!
  • I think having an option to show annotations or not would be good. I don't use Zotero for annotations anymore, but I can certainly see a use case for someone who does.

Showing only annotations that match the search would make sense as well.
  • I have this problem too. I love that I can search annotations, but so many come in search that I can't see the sources themselves. It's frustrating.

Zotero 8.0.3 is out now with "Hide Non-Matching Annotations" as the default.
