child items during searchs
Hello Zotero Support Team,
I am reporting an issue regarding Zotero 8 (version 8.0.x, Spanish interface) concerning the automatic expansion of annotations and notes in the item list during searches.
Description of the issue:
When performing a search, all child items (annotations, notes, and attached PDFs) automatically expand under each reference that contains a match.
This behavior happens only during searches. Outside of searches, the item list appears clean, with child items collapsed.
I have tried the following methods to control this behavior, all without success:
Using the “Advanced Preferences / Config Editor” to set layout.expandChildItems to false.
Checking all General preferences related to automatic expansion of child items.
Adjusting panel layouts (right panel vs. bottom panel).
Expected behavior:
Child items (annotations, notes, PDFs) should remain collapsed by default, even when performing searches, to allow a clean item list view.
Child items should open only when explicitly selected or when opening the item in the right-hand panel.
Environment:
Zotero version: 8.0.x
Interface language: Spanish
Operating System: [Your OS here, e.g., Windows 11 / macOS 13]
Zotero data directory location: [Optional if relevant]
This seems to be a design change in Zotero 8, but it reduces usability for users who prefer a clean item list.
Could you please advise if there is a way to control this behavior, or if this can be considered for future releases?
Thank you very much for your support.
Best regards,

Upgrade Storage
The change is that Zotero 8 now displays annotations in the items list, and "All Fields & Tags" and "Everything" searches match annotations. As before, if you want to match only top-level items, you can use "Title, Creator, Year" search mode or click an item and press "-" on the keyboard to collapse all items.
