Bluebook style--period at end of citation / string cites and parentheticals

I'm using Zotero's Bluebook style, and I want to be able to use "Refresh" in my Word document as I fix and update the citations in Zotero. My problem is that the period at the end of the citation is considered part of the citation, so if I insert a parenthetical before the period, or if I replace the period with a semicolon so I can add another citation, Zotero perceives that as modifying the citation. The next time I "Refresh," I have to choose between the updates to the actual citation and my parenthetical or semicolon.

Do I just have to leave the excess periods in until I'm finished?
  • Yes. The standard option is to use the suffix field for parentheticals associated with a citations as well as additions after semicolons. That would allow you to Refresh.
  • Thank you so much! I'm just starting out with this and haven't even discovered the dialogue box with the suffix box yet.
