Center pane and item pane header render titles differently

I have an entry whose title is

Restricted isometry constants where <i>ℓ<sup>p</sup></i> sparse recovery can fail for <i>0 < p ≤ 1</i>


In the item pane header, this is rendered as expected (using American Psychological Association 7th edition):

However, in the middle pane the HTML italics tags are visible:

If I remove the < symbol from the title, the HTML italics tags disappear in the middle pane, but it would be nice if it could behave like the item pane header

This is using version 8.0-beta.25+145fbfa19 (64-bit) on Linux.

When hovering over the tab, the opening italics tag is not visible, but the closing one is:
