Help also_Importing RIS file

Alike michigandrea yesterday, I can no longer import RIS files. The suggestion given in the forum is to update Zotero, but I do not like at all the new one, with a bad ergonomy for me.
Even worse, the "old" RIS files which have been already imported in the past years cannot be imported again. I do not have any Debug ID, only a message in french :
https://s3.amazonaws.com/zotero.org/images/forums/u19376057/6y2c7pxnu5pbieum6wt4.png
"the selected file is not in a supported format. OK Check the supported formats."
Any solution since
I don't understand why I should update in order to succeed in importing.
Thank you

  • Because at some point you have to stop supporting old versions -- it's just not viable to have a whole bunch of different versions of your software installed for troubleshooting, track all changes and their impact across old versions etc. That's certainly the case for small projects like Zotero, but all software providers end support for older versions at some point.

I'm afraid you'll not get any support for any errors in Zotero 6 and older here. FWIW, though, you can always generate a debug ID and you can try resetting translators as per step 13 here https://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues but you'll note that that, too, asks you to check your Zotero version before trying that.
  • Thank you Adamsmith for your answer even if I was expecting such an answer, although Zotero 6.0.25 is not so old since the update is only a few months old.
You can labeled "solved" for my side.
  • That's not right. Zotero 6.0.25 is almost 3 years old and the latest update to Zotero 6 (6.0.37) is almost two years old:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/6.0_changelog
  • Yes. Zotero 7 has been out since August 2024, and we made it an auto-update for everyone in September 2025. And Zotero 8 will be out soon.

In this case, this broke because an import translator update used some modern code that doesn't work in Zotero 6. We've now pushed a fix that avoids that, so this should start working again in Zotero 6 shortly, but we're then going to disable translator updates to Zotero 6 altogether. That will prevent further changes from breaking things, but will also mean that Zotero 6 will no longer receive any other translator bug fixes or site-compatibility fixes. So if you're still using Zotero 6, you'll need to update to a current version of Zotero if you'd like things to keep working properly.

wahou ! Thank you both of you. I thought it was a recent update, because it was only last november 2025 that an update was proposed ! Sorry, I apologize.
I will fix the problem with the proposed solution.
    Thanks again
