problems with transferring to new computer...Attached Files not Found.

Computer A. I installed Zotero and added files from my Cloud Folders to the Zotero interface. The file locations were in my personal folders, which is a cloud folder.

I annotated these files on Zotero

I also did a few snapshots of sites as part of my research library.

Now I have had to switch computers.

I have added Zotero and logged in. The Zotero software shows all my files, but when I click on them, it says "The attached file could not be found at the following path:

C:\Users\Zotero\storage...etc"

However, the files are all on the computer (as it's cloud based), but not this particular file location, but my own folders. If I manually locate a file, zotero will recognise it and I can see the annotations and highlights that I added on the previous computer. So technically I could add all the files again, step by step which would be incredibly tedious given there are hundreds of them and would go against the point that Zotero is supposed to make workflow easier! Is there a way to automate this and upload the files again, Would dragging and dropping the whole group of files work?

There is also the case of things like the snapshots that were only stored on my Zotero account I suppose. so I'm not sure where to look for them.

Any suggestions for how to proceed here?
  • See Files Not Syncing. You're just at your Zotero Storage quota.
  • Ok, for the benefit of people reading this and perhaps coming from a google search this is how I (hopefully) fixed it:

Here are some instructions (go to "Restoring Your Zotero Data From a Backup" https://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data

Essentially I didn't realise that everytime I added a PDF to Zotero, it was creating a copy in a completely separate folder. This folder was stored in my computer, but not the cloud! However there was a minimal sync that took place, but it only synced the titles of document not the actual documents.

So the instruction in the linked webpage above basically mean you need to find the file in the old computer (It's called Zotero and you can see the pdfs in the folder called storage) Then you copy the file and put it in the new computer. But before you put it in the new computer you need to find the Zotero Folder in the new computer. Rename that as Zotero Old. After that you can drag the old backup folder there and it seems like Zotero will automatically find it.
