Message: "You must place the cursor in a Zotero citation to edit it"

Report ID 1362380177

I now see the message: "You must place the cursor in a Zotero citation to edit it" when, in MS word (Win 10), I click "Add/Edit Citation".

This happens when (i) the cursor is within a citation (which I expect Zotero to edit); (ii) the cursor is not in a citation (when I expect Zotero to insert a new citation).

I updated today to 8.0-beta.24+faf8f2510 (64-bit) and the error persists (though I now see a progress bar momentarily before the popup appears).

On a separate Win11 machine, Word crashes silently when I attempt to add/edit citations within this document using Zotero.
  • A little more investigation suggests this is linked to an internal Zotero state. When I copy or rename the document, Zotero works as normal, but whenever I rename the document to its original file name, the error returns.
  • There's no internal Zotero state for word processor integration that persists past an app restart.

If it's working in a new document, see Troubleshooting Errors in Word Processor Documents for the existing document.
