Zotero crashing under Fedora 42 with Wayland Error

Dear zotero devs,
merry christmas :)
as the title already suggest, my instance of zotero is crashing with the following error under Fedora 42:

Crash Annotation GraphicsCriticalError: |[0][GFX1-]: Wayland protocol error: wp_linux_drm_syncobj_surface_v1#80: error 3: Release or Acquire point set but no buffer attached
(t=175.379) [GFX1-]: Wayland protocol error: wp_linux_drm_syncobj_surface_v1#80: error 3: Release or Acquire point set but no buffer attached

Gdk-Message: 14:58:02.286: Error 71 (Protokollfehler) dispatching to Wayland display.

I already tried to replicate it, it seems to happen about 1-10min after the initial startup while using the .pdf viewer (which is from mozilla i believe)

Scrolling through the web I think it has to do with a python libary provides by mozilla.
If you can tell me steps on how I can give you more usefull information, I'm happy to do so.

  • How did you install Zotero? Make sure you're testing with the official tarball from this site.
  • I did download the official tarball and also updated my system to Fedora 43 Workstation. Still no luck so far. The crashes keep happening. Although they seem to have something to do with my behaviour, cause i wasn't using zotero for 20min and still had it open but it didn't crash, still when I came and was marking stuff in the .pdf, it crashed.
  • Does it happen in Troubleshooting Mode (Help → "Restart in Troubleshooting Mode…”)?
  • You can also try the Zotero 8 beta.
  • Running in Troubleshooting Mode did help, it didn't crash once but the program felt slow and unresponsive.

Funny enough i have it also running on my laptop (Framework 12 with the same operating system config) and it didn't crash to this point.

Troubleshooting Mode disables all plugins and it disables some graphics features like hardware acceleration (which is why it's slower). If you're running any plugins, you can try manually disabling those and restarting (though those generally shouldn't be able to crash Zotero except via memory leaks). Otherwise, you'd want to look into updating your graphics drivers or trying the Zotero 8 beta.
  • as I'm not running any programs, I think this is most likely something with buggy Nvidia drivers. I use the Zotero 8 beta for now an will report back.

Is a crashdump helpful for you, if it happens again?
