importing pdf files to library

I am having trouble importing references into my library using the drag feature. I've done it before but can't recall how to do it now.

I can successfully drag a pdf file into my library, but it just appears at the end of the library as a pdf file and is not created as a reference - i.e. the data do not come in.

Thoughts?

Whether metadata can be retrieved depends entirely on the specific file.
